Cultural Respect in Digital Processes

A survey on the respectful handling and display of cultural art and artifacts online.

Cultural diversity is often more present within the objects in a museum’s collections than within the staff managing the archive.

This inevitably leads to the handling and display of cultural artifacts by those who are not members of the culture represented. Certain guidelines detailing the respectful handing and display of cultural objects have been established regarding physical display. This project endeavors to ascertain a better understanding of how to respectfully handle and display cultural art and artifacts online. It aims to span processes associated with digitization operations, publishing and labeling schema and standards of individual assets and display within digital exhibitions or galleries on the museum’s website and beyond.

Whether it is a level of detail in labeling the tribal affiliation of an indigenous cultural object or artwork, the accurate classification of artistic versus ethnographic material or the acknowledgement of how and when an asset was acquired by an institution- you have the right to a say in how your culture is represented online by museums.
